THE CONSTITUTION OF 1978


We have studied in unit 5, the first Spanish Constitution that was signed in Cádiz in 1812 and is also known as `La Pepa´.


However, in the twentieth century, a new Spanish Constitution was signed.



 It was in 1978, after the end of Franco´s dictatorship, when this Constitution was voted in favour.
This Constitution established:

Right to vote for all citizens over eighteen years of age



Freedom of expression



Equality under the law




The Constitution established that  Spain is a democratic country with a parliamentary monarchy as a form of government.
Felipe VI was proclaimed king in 2014

Spanish Parliament

The Constitution also recognizes the organisation of Spanish territory in autonomous communities.


Since 1995, Spain has been organized into seventeen autonomous communities
